Our harvest of men
Publication Date: 2023-11-01
Content Summary:
In four years, the author's five close friends and relatives died in succession. Their deaths seemed unrelated, but intertwined by identity and location. These young African Americans live in the deep South of the United States, where intergenerational poverty shrouds their lives. In reminiscing about the past, the author shows how racism is deeply institutionalized through economic and educational disparities, plaguing generations of young black people more than a century and a half after the end of the Civil War. Mixing the warmth of hometown with the guilt of the survivors, the author finally returns to his homeland, writing down their stories and his own, bringing back to life the vivid faces hidden behind cold statistics.
